Artesia is home to one of four Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers in the U.S. where federal agents, including border patrol, are trained, bringing a regular flow of personnel to the area. Agriculture is also an active part of the economy, and the surrounding valley is home to some of the largest pecan orchards in the world. The local economy is very strong: the unemployment rate in the Artesia area is well below the national average and household incomes are among the highest in the state.
